How to Use Your BFST® Wrap

3 Level Controller

BFST® Wraps stimulate blood flow to repair injured tissue and promote fast healing. The BFST® Wrap is designed to treat soft tissue injuries and chronic conditions. It is also ideal for post-surgery recovery.

The BFST® Wrap should not be used following a fresh trauma, substantial re-injury, or even following physical activity as there will likely be swelling/inflammation. The best way to relieve pain and inflammation is to use ColdCure® Wraps.

Levels 1, 2 and 3

Less heat means a more effective treatment. When too much surface heat is applied, it causes blood to pool at the skin and forms a protective barrier preventing deep penetration and making it harder for your soft tissues to receive the benefits of the BFST® device. The more subtle the warmth, the more effective the treatment will be. It's a 'Healing Pad', not a 'Heating Pad'. When using the BFST®, if it does feel hot, use the wrap on a lower level. Less is more when it comes to heat and BFST® treatments.

Everyone should start their treatments on Level 1 and gradually work their way through the levels as they heal. During your first treatments on Level 1, the treatment area may feel quite warm (your circulation is poor). The more treatments you do, the less warming sensation you will feel. This is good. As the warmth lessens from treatment to treatment, this means your circulation is improving. Better circulation means improved blood flow all the time, not just during treatments. When you feel very little warmth during a treatment, it is time to move up to the next power level. Moving through the levels is not a race. You are supposed to move through the levels slowly. Before moving up to the next level, make sure you can feel almost no warmth on the previous level. Most people never get to Level 3. Moving up in levels too quickly works against you. Remember, less is more.

Recommended Treatment

Do 3-4 BFST® Treatments Per Day

Completing 3-4 BFST® treatments through the day will provide increased blood flow all day long. If combining KB Support Tape with BFST® treatments, ensure that the first BFST® treatment is completed before you apply the support tape and the last BFST® treatment is completed after the support tape has been removed.

Everyone has a different schedule, but an easy routine to adopt at first would be a BFST® treatment first thing in the morning, another treatment around lunchtime, the third treatment around dinner, and the last treatment right before going to bed. Completing a BFST® treatment before any physical activity or workout routine will help ensure adequate blood flow and is an excellent addition to the warm-up routine.

Prior to each BFST® treatment, evaluate how you are feeling. BFST® treatments work best when there is no swelling or inflammation. If there is an increase in pain since the last BFST® treatment, applying a ColdCure® wrap will help with symptomatic relief of pain and reduce any swelling. Paying attention to the pain will also help stop the re-injury cycle and will help progress your overall recovery.

Completing BFST® treatments directly on skin and not over clothing is recommended. The BFST® Wrap should be worn loosely during treatment. You should be able to fit two fingers between the wrap and your skin.

Prevent Re-Injury

Keep Doing BFST® Treatments

There is a huge benefit to continuing BFST® treatments for months and even years after the pain is gone. The healing process takes much longer than most people realize. Even once the pain is gone, your injury may only be 20% - 30% healed. (You can click here for the full story). The key thing to remember is that long after the pain stops, your injury is still healing. That's why you need to keep doing regular BFST® treatments. Continuing to do BFST® treatments for 6 months, 1 year, or even 2 years after you've been injured is very important when it comes to preventing re-injury. Do a BFST® treatment prior to any physical activity you do. This will act as a "warm-up" for your circulatory system and help you avoid re-injury.

Pain During/After Treatment

There is a possibility that during or following BFST® treatments the pain of the injury can increase. This is typically an indication that the area has recently been re-injured. These symptoms can be treated with ColdCure® treatments. But most importantly, you need to be aware that something leading up to your treatment caused your situation to get worse. The BFST® is just making it more noticeable, It is not causing the underlying problem. Pain is unpleasant but it is also your body's way of letting you know something is wrong. It is important that you figure out what is aggravating the injury and try to eliminate the underlying cause. Do not complete BFST® treatments immediately after re-injury. Instead, focus on ColdCure treatments for symptomatic pain relief, and once that pain has been reduced and you are ready to use BFST®, the BFST® treatments will not make the symptoms worse.

How to Use Your ColdCure® Wrap

ColdCure® Wraps Reduce Pain & Inflammation

ColdCure® Wraps are designed to reduce pain and inflammation by preventing blood and fluid from building up in the area of injury. It's important that the ColdCure® Wrap be used as soon as possible following a soft tissue injury. It can also be used any time after to alleviate pain and swelling associated with mature or returning injuries.

The ColdCure® Wrap can be worn without the XC Gel® pack to provide support for your injury while reducing swelling.

Note: Ideally, the injured area should be at rest during treatment.

ColdCure® Treatments

ColdCure® Wraps come with 3 XC RigiGel® packs. The XC Gel® packs will take 2-6 hours to fully charge, depending on how cold your freezer is. It is recommended to store the gel packs in the freezer at all times so they're always ready to use when needed. Insert the XC Gel® pack inside the wrap; apply the wrap to the injured area, do a 20 minute cold treatment, then remove the gel pack from the wrap and put it back in the freezer to recharge. If necessary, repeat with another gel pack. With our XC Gel® technology, you no longer need to wait between cold applications.

You Can Now Do Back-to-Back Cold Treatments

If you find the gel packs too stiff to put on when you remove them from the freezer, this is normal. It's a safety feature that we've designed to prevent application if they're too cold. Simply let the gel pack sit out for several minutes before inserting it inside the wrap. When the gel pack is soft enough to bend, it's ready to use for treatment. Alternatively, if you find the gel packs too cold when applied, use a thin layer of clothing between the gel pack and your skin.

When people have severe inflammation, the cold may be less noticeable to them because of the pain they're in. This just means that a few back-to-back ColdCure treatments will be needed in order to start bringing the pain down. This is why we provide three gel packs. Keep the gel packs stored in the freezer permanently whenever they're not in use.

Recommended Treatment

Use Following Fresh Trauma

ColdCure® treatments should be used immediately following fresh trauma to reduce swelling and inflammation. ColdCure® is designed to relieve pain and inflammation associated with soft tissue injuries. Reducing swelling and inflammation is the first step to healing.

Individuals suffering from mature injuries may further irritate the injured area through overuse, which may be followed by an increase in pain and inflammation. Using ColdCure® after physical activity will help minimize inflammation caused by overuse or strain. In cases of re-injury, use ColdCure® as often as necessary to reduce pain and inflammation.

While recovering from an injury, any strenuous activity can cause inflammation and swelling. Any time that activity has increased significantly, whether pain is felt or not, completing a quick ColdCure® treatment can keep you pain-free.

Combination Therapy Instructions

Combination Treatment = Combining Use of BFST® ColdCure® & KB Support Tape

Combination Therapy means using ColdCure® and BFST® in combination by alternating treatments, as well as using KB Support Tape throughout the day. Combination Therapy is much more effective than using just one product over the other. This is because you're getting the pain and swelling relief of ColdCure®, the healing benefits of BFST®, and the protection and re-injury prevention of KB Support Tape, resulting in the absolute best treatment for your injury.

Step 1: Relieve the Swelling

Use the ColdCure® Wrap as often as you like to help reduce not only the visible swelling you may see on the surface but also the inflammation you may have and cannot see deep down in the soft tissue. Continue to do regular ColdCure® treatments until the swelling and inflammation is gone. You should notice a reduction in pain that's caused by the inflammation and swelling. Use the ColdCure® Wrap immediately following any vigorous activity that may have strained the injured area even if you do not feel immediate pain.

Combination Therapy

Step 2: Heal Your Injury

Introduce BFST® treatments at times where your injury has been at rest or free from reinjury for at least a couple hours. If you experience any pain or discomfort during BFST® treatments, go back to ColdCure® treatments. Initially, when you begin your treatments on Level 1, you may experience a tingling or heightened warming sensation. Over time you will notice the warming sensation diminishing. When you feel almost no warmth at the beginning of a new treatment, it is time to move up to the next level. Moving to Level 2 or 3 will not speed up your healing time. You need to condition your injury first and gradually move up the levels to gain maximum benefit from your BFST® treatments.

Step 3: Treat Flare-Ups

Do a ColdCure® treatment any time you experience a pain flare-up or after any physical activity to prevent further injury and reduce swelling and inflammation. You will not use BFST and ColdCure close together. The BFST is for before activity and at times of rest. The ColdCure is for after activity. Try to avoid using ColdCure within 1 hour before or 4 hours after a BFST treatment.

Step 4: Use KB Support Tape

Any time you're not doing a ColdCure® or BFST® treatment, wear KB Support Tape over your injury. If you're taping and doing multiple BFST® treatments throughout the day, do your first BFST® treatment before the Tape is applied and your last treatment after the support tape has been removed at the end of the day. You can do BFST treatments through the tape. They are not as effective, but they are still worthwhile. You can use ColdCure over the Tape anytime without any concerns.

Step 5: Complete The Healing Process

You need to keep doing BFST® treatments even after the pain is gone, because the pain ends long before your injury has finished healing. The healing process is very complex and takes much longer than most people realize. (You can click here for the full story.) The key thing to remember is that long after the pain stops, your injury is still healing. Do regular BFST® treatments for several months after the pain is gone in order to complete the healing process. Do a BFST® treatment prior to any physical activity to warm up your circulatory system. You should also continue taping to help prevent re-injury.

Baker's Cyst Combination Therapy

We have separate Combination Therapy instructions for people suffering with a Baker's Cyst. Please click here for our Baker's Cyst Combination Therapy instructions.

Arthritis Combination Therapy

When it comes to using Combination Therapy to treat arthritis, there is one exception to the above instructions. If you are using BFST® to treat your symptoms, you would continue using BFST® for symptomatic relief, regardless of the pain and swelling.

How to Use Your KB Support Tape

Many injuries are not one time injuries, but recurring injuries because we cannot rest properly for our bodies to heal. KB Support Tape is there to provide additional support for your injury. Not only does it provide compression in order to help control swelling and allow for more effective BFST® treatments over time, the Support Tape also helps to limit how much the skin can stretch. This means that your skin turns into a rigid protective armor, to protect your injury further while being active. It does all of this, while still providing fluid range of motion.

No two people have the exact same injury. Even if it is the same body part, an injury can be in different areas of that part and can run in different directions. Based on your own personal injury, the taping method is going to change from one person to another depending on where the pain is located. The taping instructions in our videos, on our site, or even on any other video or webpage is a general guide but it may not be exactly right for you. The key thing is to tape over top of the pain. If you can place 2 strips in a cross or x-shape over the painful area that provides the maximum protection. Try different methods of taping your injury. It will be clear to you when you have picked a taping style that is just right for your injury.

Please visit our Support Tape Instructions page for information on how to use our KB Tape.

How to Use Your BFST® Battery Pack

Do I need the BFST® Battery Pack for the BFST® to work? No. It is a convenient accessory. The BFST® Battery Pack is designed to make your BFST® Wrap completely mobile. It attaches anywhere on your wrap by using the Velcro® patch included in the box and can be used 10 to 20 treatments between charges, depending on what level you are using your BFST®. The BFST® Battery Pack does not come with a Power Supply. Instead, to recharge the BFST® Battery Pack, use the Power Supply included with your BFST® Product.

To turn on the BFST® Battery Pack, press the power button on the front, and the blue percentage lights will illuminate. Then press the button on the controller, and your treatment will start. The BFST® Battery Pack will turn itself off automatically after a few minutes of inactivity.

During the use of your BFST® Product, you may notice that the lights turn off on the BFST® Battery Pack. This is okay. As long as the lights continue to stay on, on the controller your BFST® is still working and you are still getting your treatments.

When you plug in your Power Supply, you will see the "Charge Mode" light start to flash. This is good. Recharging your BFST® Battery Pack can sometimes take over 4 hours when the battery is close to 0%.

*The BFST® Battery Pack is specifically designed to work with your BFST® Wrap. For further information on whether a Battery Pack is suitable for your treatment schedule, please contact our Treatment Advisors by email or phone.
