What does BFST® have in common with walking on the moon? People talked about it for ages, but actually making it happen took a lot of effort and ingenuity.
The concept behind Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy is very simple: Promote blood flow around the injured area and help the body heal itself. After all, the human body is incredibly good at fixing itself. Every injury or disease we get includes a major component of the body performing self healing in the recovery process. And the most important factor in the self healing process is blood flow. The concept is simple: Improve the blood flow and you will improve the healing process. Like walking on the moon though, getting there is a difficult feat.
Even though the concept is simple, making it happen is incredibly difficult. Particularly when the injury is soft tissue like an inflamed or torn tendon, ligament or muscle. By design, these body parts require your body to move to promote blood flow. But the same motions that promotes blood flow can also lead to making your injury or condition worse. The real challenge is how do we promote blood flow while the body is at rest? Like travelling to the moon, there are many, many obstacles that stand in the way of both.
For decades - maybe even centuries - the answer to promoting blood flow was to apply heat to the outside of the body. Heating your skin causes blood to flow to the surface (to wash away the heat and bring moisture to the area) and hopefully that will promote blood flow beneath the skin as well. WRONG! Applying a hot pack to your body to heal deep tissues is about as effective as holding feathers in your hand and flapping your arms to fly to the moon. Heating the skin just doesn't work. But, if you're in the business of selling feathers or hot packs, you're going to keep telling that old story because it sells your product, even if it doesn't really work.
